December 26th

Six years prior to our visit, Koh Phi Phi was devastated by the tsunami that was caused by a massive earthquake in Indonesia. As I’ve described, the central part of the island, where all the shops are and the main development, is very low lying. On December 26, 2004, the water completely submerged this part of the island. An estimated 3000 people were killed. Today, those people, their survivors, and others affected by the tragedy were remembered in a ceremony near the central part of the town. The ceremony was multi-lingual and included practices from Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. The six Buddhist monks led some chanting and received gifts, mostly of food from the people there. The lieutenant governor of the province spoke as well as a few others.  Each restaurant had donated some food to provide for the attendees.
After a brief dip in the water, we packed up and boarded the 2pm ferry back to Krabi, where we stayed for the night. We found a big and very popular night market in Krabi – and some excellent noodles!
